I am an intermediate skier that just likes to get out for a few hours and have options when runs fill up. Mt Kato provides the opportunity to move around when it is busy and you don't get stuck waiting.

  • Good value with an assortment of runs for good spacing and overall experience

While on the website it says that Mt Kato has 240 feet of vertical, I measured this myself using a GPS and discovered that there is only a little under 140 feet of vertical. Their trails are all intermediate, with a couple of expert chutes , making this a great spot for families. Their parks department is lacking at best. On their trail map four terrain parks are indicated, but it is rare to find more than two open at a time. The chalet is in poor shape. Food service is what you might expect for a midrange ski area, burners and fries and whatnot. Overall, a place to avoid if you’re looking for a ski destination, but a great place for families and beginners to learn.

  • Cheap, family friendly, close to Mankato
  • Parks are terrible, no real vertical, no expert trails, chalet is dated.

I worked here as a lift op last year after spending most of my life in the west - Tahoe, Colorado, Utah. If you've ever ridden a real mountain, you'll laugh at this place. The hills are so small you could blink and miss them. Still, its super close to town and well groomed. Great for beginners, families with little kids.

  • Lots of discount days. Short lines. Well maintained parks. Close to town. Well groomed.
  • Less than 300 ft vertical. Longest run takes 2-3 minutes. Not much powder. Steeps take only 10 seconds.

It's a nice place in the MN River Valley, very scenic. About 19 runs, 8 lifts, 3 terrain parks (easy/small, med & large/more difficult). Reasonable lift rates ($35ish), food prices & pro shop prices. The lone resort for a very large area south & west of Mankato relies heavily on groups (as they should), but that means alot of inexperienced people to look out (be cautious) for. But hey, we all start somewhere. Sioux Falls, SW MN & NE IA area skiers & boarders that want a day trip (3hrs one way from Sioux Falls) should consider Kato if a trip to the Black Hills seems a bit much in dollars and/or time. Mt. Kato also has bike trails in the summer. We has a great time when we took our mountainboards there last fall as well. The lifts wern't open, so we had to hike, but cool to see the resort so colorful, quiet & rode some trails you can't in the winter.

  • Several runs, has a lift,
  • Geographically Limited

This was the first place that I ever went sking and overall I was impressed. I started off with ski lessons and was extremly dissapointed. I had a lot of trouble learning how to ski and the instructor who was probably only 14 years old was no help at all. I got the hang of it by the end of my first day but, I was on my butt almost all of the first day. After the bad first day I started to explore the Mountian and I found the areas to be very good although there were some icy areas. Overall this was a good place for my to start sking.

  • Good Downhill Runs
  • Small, Average Lessons
