Reservé en Red River para la familia porque lo anunciaban como "ideal para principiantes". Hacía más de 10 años que nadie en la familia esquiaba, y teníamos un niño de 8 años que era su primera vez. La escuela de esquí para niños, carísima, tenía muy buena pinta. El instructor de mi nieto, Brian, se pasó la mayor parte del tiempo hablando con ellos mientras aprendían a mantenerse quietos sobre los esquís. Solo subieron en el telesilla, que es corto. Al final del día, apenas había esquiado. Cuando preguntamos por el telesilla, Brian dijo que no lo usaban hasta que los niños llevaban 3 días en la escuela de esquí (por un precio de 750 dólares). Yo quiero seguridad, no inercia. En cambio, hace 30 años, su padre, con 7 años, tomó una clase en Angel Fire. Al mediodía ya estaba en la montaña y se adaptó al esquí enseguida. Además, Red River solo tiene unas pocas pistas verdes de verdad, a menos que vayas a la parte trasera de la montaña. Si bien esa zona es excelente y tiene muchas pistas verdes auténticas, el único descenso es por una pista azul que se anuncia como verde. Incluso los esquiadores más experimentados de nuestro grupo tuvieron dificultades, y no sé si mi nuera volverá a esquiar. Por eso evito Taos: solo hay dos maneras de bajar, una en la que tienes que impulsarte con bastones sin parar y otra como esta, que es empinada y desafiante para un principiante. Recomendaría ir a Angel Fire si quieres quedarte en Nuevo México, o a Copper si buscas una buena zona montañosa con pistas separadas para todos los esquiadores.

Primera vez que esquío aquí. Quería probar. Sin esperas. Muchas pistas diferentes. Mucha nieve. Un montón de señales para las pistas, así que sabías adónde ir. Es un lugar pequeño, así que hay menos gente. Es más fácil moverse. Sin duda volveré. El quiosco para comprar los forfaits es muy práctico.

Great size mountain for a family with kids of different ages and abilities. Got a good snow early in the week that made for great conditions. Had a wonderful visit and will definitely be back!

My mother-in-law had a cabin here for years. We did more cross-country skiing, but did do some downhill. The mountain would be a good one to learn on, but a more experienced skier will soon be bored. Unfortunately spring skiing is hit-or-miss because of the lower elevation. The town itself is really boring, just a few restaurants, none of which are very good, and no apres ski scene to speak of. Taos Ski Valley is better in every way.

Love this mountain as it’s great for any skier.

Take my grand kids there. They love it. Fifty year skier, passing it on to my twenty three grand kids. Our second home. dale hall

This is a great little ski resort, and the town has everything you want. You have to understand this is not a large resort like Winter Park. It is much smaller. But the trade off is a lot less people. While the town is full and vibrant during the peak season, there are never long lift lines. But the town has great shops, friendly people, and a great selection of restaurants. The mountain does not have a lot of exceptional terrain, but it has a variety of blue and green runs for all levels of skiers to enjoy. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. By the way, I recommend going to Colorado for spring break skiing. It is usually pretty warm in New Mexico at that time and the snow can be sparse and/or slushy at that time.

We've been skiing Taos, Purgatory, Angel Fire and Ski Apache for the last ten+ years. Mostly at Taos and Purgatory, only trying the others once. Red River is a nice mountain when they have snow. Not much snow at Spring Break this year. I don't know about other years. Spring Break can be funny, weather wise. We've been in blizzards and deserts, this year at Red River a desert. We skied three days. It got pretty slushy early. Some runs should have been closed but were not. Lots of exposed grass, stumps and...well, no snow. They do a pretty good job of bringing the mountain back up to speed by morning, but this spring break just didn't have enough snow for me. Coming down the top lift by 11:00 had big mixture of slush. I'm sure it's great when there is snow, I did see lots of people enjoying themselves. We left early our last day.

This is a great little ski mountain when they have snow (middle of winter, early spring) I have only been here once, mainly since I am an expert skier and usually end up at nearby Taos, the mecca of steep. But, I was glad I came because Red River has some great medium-steep runs too. I consider it best for beginner and advanced skiers. The beginner area at the base is fairly large, and there is another whole beginner area up at the top of the mountain! It is a little unusual the way they have it split up into little areas each served by its own short lift, but that makes it great for families with children. Your children would have to try really hard to get lost on this mountain! This is one of the few ski areas in NM with a town right at the base, ski-in, ski-out.
